Apprenticeships in England are structured in levels, similar to traditional qualifications. Each level represents the complexity of the skills you’ll learn and the qualification you’ll achieve.

What makes up a typical apprenticeship?

Paid Employment

You must be employed in a relevant role

Training

At least 20% of your time is protected for training (off-the-job learning)

Study

Training is delivered by an approved provider

Level 2: Intermediate

Equivalent to GCSEs. A starting point for developing basic skills and gaining workplace experience.

Level 3: Advanced

Equivalent to A-levels. Builds more specialised knowledge and prepares you for skilled roles or further study.

Level 4 and 5: Higher

Equivalent to a foundation degree or HND. Focuses on technical and professional skills for more advanced roles. MK:U now offers L4 as progression pathways.

Level 6: Degree Level

Equivalent to a foundation degree or HND. Focuses on technical and professional skills for more advanced roles. Most of M:U apprenticeships sit at this level.

Level 7: Postgraduate

Equivalent to a master's degree. Designed for professionals looking to deepen expertise or move into leadership roles.
