MK:U and GXO have partnered to develop the next generation of robotics and automation specialists through the UK’s first degree-level Robotics Engineering Apprenticeship. The programme responds directly to the growing demand for advanced technical skills across the logistics sector, combining academic excellence with real-world industry experience to prepare apprentices for careers at the forefront of automation, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

The Challenge
The logistics industry is undergoing rapid technological transformation. Robotics, automation and AI are reshaping warehouse operations, improving productivity, increasing efficiency and creating safer working environments.
However, as organisations adopt increasingly sophisticated technologies, demand for highly skilled engineers has grown significantly. The Solution
Working alongside Cranfield University and industry partners, MK:U launched the UK’s first degree-level Robotics Engineering Apprenticeship to address this emerging skills gap. The three-and-a-half-year programme combines academic study with practical workplace experience, enabling apprentices to develop expertise in:

- Artificial intelligence Automation technologies
- Programming and software development
- Systems integration
- Engineering design and maintenance
Designed with employers, the apprenticeship ensures that learning reflects the latest developments in robotics while allowing participants to immediately apply new knowledge within their organisations.

As one of the UK’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers, GXO has a long-standing commitment to developing talent through work-based learning.
The organisation enrolled two colleagues onto the inaugural Robotics Engineering Apprenticeship, including Greg Matthews, an Automation Engineering Manager based at GXO’s Daventry site.
Already working with advanced automation technologies, Greg viewed the apprenticeship as an opportunity to deepen his technical expertise while continuing to deliver operational improvements within the business.
Reflecting on the programme, Greg said:
“This apprenticeship is a game-changer for my career. The course offers the perfect balance of hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge in robotics. I look forward to deepening my expertise and applying what I learn to my day-to-day role at GXO.”
The programme allows apprentices to remain in full-time employment while studying, ensuring that learning has an immediate impact within the workplace.
